Fitness assessments provide information needed to develop reasonable, attainable goals. Progress toward or attainment of a goal is a strong motivation for continued participation in an exercise program.

Our aim is to examine the relative proportions of fat versus fat free (lean) tissue in the body. The result is commonly reported as a percentage of body fat, thus identifying the proportion of the total body mass composed of fat. Free fat mass is then determined as the balance of the total body mass.

Assessment will be done as the following (all measurements should be taken on the right side):

• Skin fold Test: Because the assumed relationship between subcutaneous fat and
total body fat, skin fold measurements are a common method of estimating
body fat percentage.

• Circumferential Measurements: Assess the circumferential dimensions of various body parts. Provides indication of growth, nutritional status,and fat patterning.

• Body Measurements: Body width measurements provide information for
determining frame size and body type. Can be used to estimate desirable
weight based on stature.

• Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR): A simple index of upper versus lower body fat
distribution WHR provides a predictor of disease risk related to fat distribution.
First a waist circumference and hip circumference are measured. Then, WHR is
calculated using a standard monogram and is compared to available standards.
